Dr Binda Pandey
Dr Binda Pandey is a Nepali political leader and a dedicated advocate for women’s rights, committed to social justice and gender equality. A member of Nepal’s first Constituent Assembly representing the CPN-UML, she has served as Deputy Member of the ILO Governing Body and Deputy General Secretary of GEFONT. She holds multiple degrees, including a PhD from Kathmandu University. In 2019, she authored ‘Women in Nepali Politics’, and in 2024, ‘Samsadiya Rajniti’. Recently, she was suspended by CPN-UML for criticising the party’s acceptance of a controversial land donation.
Dhan Kumari Sunar
Dhan Kumari Sunar is a political analyst, writer and activist. She is the President of the Women’s Organisation of the Scientific Socialist Communist Party of Nepal and a former Member of the National Women’s Commission. A strong advocate for marginalised communities, she focuses on Dalit women’s education, empowerment and social inclusion. In recent years, she has promoted economic independence for women, co-founding ‘Tillikka Jhol Sabun Udhyog’, a detergent business led by women. She continues to push for constitutional amendments addressing domestic violence, particularly against Dalit women.
Devi Khadka
Devi Khadka is an activist, former Maoist rebel fighter, and ex-Member of Parliament. She is at the forefront of advocating for wartime sexual violence survivors. A survivor herself, she leads two organisations documenting cases, lobbying for aid, and pushing for justice through Nepal’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Honored as ‘Nagarik Nayak 2081’ in 2024, she continues her fight for justice. Her story is the focus of the 2024 documentary ‘Devi’.
Krishni Devi Tharu, former Deputy Speaker of Lumbini Province, overcame years of bonded servitude as a Kamlari to become a key leader in the Kamaiya Movement. As national chairperson of Kamaiya Mahila Jagaran Samaj, she continues advocating for freed Kamaiyas and Kamlari women. In 2024, she partnered with CARE Nepal to launch the SUDHAR project, enhancing disaster resilience and inclusivity for marginalised communities.
Manushi Yami Bhattarai
Manushi Yami Bhattarai is a youth leader, politician and educator, serving as a central committee member of the Nepal Samajwadi Party. She holds an MPhil from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi and is an advocate for youth, gender equality, and progressive policies. In the 2022 federal elections, she represented the Left-Democratic Alliance in Kathmandu 7. She is a strong proponent of youth rights and stronger policies that promote equality.
Nanda Gurung
Nanda Gurung is Nepal’s first and only woman elected as a provincial Speaker, leading the Karnali Provincial Assembly since 2023. Elected as a proportional representative from the indigenous people category in 2022, she has worked to make the assembly more effective, prioritising legislative enactment and implementation.
Renu Dahal
Renu Dahal, Mayor of Bharatpur, has driven major urban development, expanding infrastructure and public health services. In 2024, she launched free drinking water for households, a Rs. 100,000 daughter insurance scheme, and ‘Bharatpur Visit Year 2024’ to boost tourism. Her leadership earned her the ‘International Mayor Award’ in Political and Public Life Awards 2024 at the House of Commons in the UK. She joined The CPN Maoist Centre in 1994.
Shiva Maya Tumbahangphe
Shiva Maya Tumbahangphe, Nepal’s Ambassador to South Korea since January 2025, has over four decades as a career politician. A former Deputy Speaker and Law Minister, she has championed women’s leadership. In her diplomatic role, she has strengthened Nepal-Korea ties, facilitating a trade and investment MoU and hosting the ‘Nepal-Korea Business Forum’ to attract investors. She joined politics as a communist leader in eastern Nepal, and holds a PhD in political science from Tribhuvan University.
Sumana Shrestha
Sumana Shrestha, a former consultant turned activist entered the parliament in 2022 vowing accountability in politics. As a Member of Parliament representing the Rashtriya Swatantra Party and and ex-Minister of Education, Science & Technology, she champions governance reform, transparency and student rights. She pushed for a parliamentary calendar, proposed a ‘Bill Hackathon’ for public involvement in lawmaking, and continues to drive policy innovation. Reshu Bashyal
Reshu Bashyal, a conservation biologist with Greenhood Nepal and an EDGE Fellow, researches illegal wildlife trade and policy. A Chevening scholar with dual MSc degrees, her work on Asian medicinal plant trade and Nepal’s orchid conservation has been widely recognised. She focuses on protecting vulnerable species like ‘Taxus mairei’.
Shanti Devi Yadav
Shanti Devi Yadav, a conservation activist, led a 2024 march from Janakpur to Kathmandu, protesting illegal sand mining in the Kamala River and Chure deforestation. Covering 35-40 km daily, she demanded stricter enforcement and recognition of conservation martyr Dilip Mahato, highlighting the urgent water crisis in the Terai region.
Shilshila Acharya
Shilshila Acharya, named one of BBC’s 100 Inspiring Women of 2024, is a climate pioneer and the founder of Avni Ventures, Nepal’s largest plastic recycling network. She employs marginalised communities to turn waste into sustainable products and led the 2014 campaign that led to Nepal’s plastic bag ban. Since 2019, her Himalayan clean-ups have removed 119 tonnes of waste left by mountaineers.
Sneha Shrestha
Sneha Shrestha is on the frontlines of animal advocacy in Asia and the founder of Sneha’s Care that rescued and rehabilitated over 20,000 animals since 2015. Her organisation provides medical care, shelters stray animals, and advocates for stronger animal welfare laws. In 2023, she expanded efforts for farm animal welfare, establish a sanctuary and fight inhumane livestock practices. Recognised with multiple awards, including the Nepal Veterinary Association Excellence Award, she continues to lead Nepal’s animal rights movement.
Uma Devi Badi
Uma Devi Badi, a politician and activist, has been a relentless advocate for the marginalised Badi community. She led a 48-day protest in Kathmandu in 2007, securing government commitments for land, education, and employment. In 2017, she became the first elected Badi representative, serving in the Sudurpashchim Provincial Assembly for Nepali Congress. Recognised globally, she was ranked 10th in BBC’s “100 Inspiring and Influential Women” in 2018 for her groundbreaking activism.
Urmila Chaudhary
Urmila Chaudhary, a former kamalari and activist against bonded labor, has freed over 16,000 girls from slavery. She is a 2024 U.S. Global Anti-Racism Champion and the subject of the award-winning documentary ‘Urmila: My Memory is My Power’. Now pursuing a law degree, she leads 30 cooperative groups focused on women’s empowerment and continues to advocate for marginalised communities.
Swastika Shrestha
Swastika Shrestha is the Co-founder and CEO at Teach For Nepal, a movement of outstanding university graduates and young professionals who are committed to ending education inequity in Nepal starting with a two-year teaching fellowship in public schools. Prior to this, Swastika facilitated youth leadership, life-skill development, service learning, and experiential learning projects for more than 12 years. Recently, her work has focused on the integration of AI in climate resilience, developing AI-driven models for renewable energy optimisation and environmental monitoring. She also explores the ethical implications of AI in education and its role in bridging the digital divide for underserved communities.
Neera Adhikari
Neera Adhikari is the first blind person to be promoted to Under-Secretary in Nepal’s government. As the Director of the Department of Women and Children, she played a key role in drafting the 2017 Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act. She is also the Founder President of the Blind Women Association Nepal, advocating for accessibility and inclusion. Recently, Neera has been at the forefront of initiatives to improve disability-inclusive education and employment opportunities in Nepal, working with international organisations to strengthen disability rights advocacy. Her efforts have earned her the 2016 Civil Service Award and recognition as a leading voice for disability empowerment in South Asia. Dr Neeti Aryal Khanal
Dr Neeti Aryal Khanal is a seasoned sociologist with over 15 years of experience in gender, disability and social justice research. As an Assistant Professor at Tribhuvan University’s Patan Multiple Campus and a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Oberlin College (2024–2025), Dr Neeti’s work has been pivotal in addressing feminist issues and advocating for marginalised communities. Recently, her research has focused on the intersectionality of gender and disability in Nepal, examining how social structures impact access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for disabled women. She is also leading a project on community-based approaches to disability rights and empowerment in rural areas.
Gandaki Thapa Adhikari
Gandaki Thapa Adhikari is the Chairperson of Badigad Rural Municipality, Baglung, known for her leadership in digitising the local government for transparency and fighting corruption. She has launched welfare programs, including free health insurance, X-ray services for pregnant women, and nutritional support for mothers. Additionally, she promotes small industries and facilitates community reconciliation and judicial committee exchanges. Recently, Gandaki has spearheaded initiatives to improve rural infrastructure, including solar energy projects and digital literacy training for local women. Priya Adhikari
Priya Adhikari shattered glass ceilings as Nepal’s first female helicopter rescue pilot, executing high-altitude rescue missions on Mount Everest and surrounding peaks. She has conducted numerous successful rescue missions, saving both locals and foreign mountaineers on Everest’s perilous slopes. Priya has helped break gender barriers in Nepal’s aviation industry, which was traditionally male-dominated. Recently, she has been involved in developing training programs for aspiring female pilots in Nepal aiming to empower women in aviation. Her work also focuses on improving safety protocols for high-altitude rescue operations, ensuring better outcomes in extreme conditions.
Dr Reeta Gurung
Dr Reeta Gurung is an ophthalmologist and cornea specialist dedicated to eliminating preventable blindness. As CEO of the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in Nepal, she has played a pivotal role in improving regional eye care. Her team’s efforts have restored sight to over a million individuals through surgeries and provided basic eye care to 13.1 million people. She has trained ophthalmic professionals globally and led cataract camps in remote areas, delivering free surgeries to underserved communities. Recently, Dr Reeta has been instrumental in advancing sustainable eye care solutions in rural Nepal incorporating telemedicine and mobile clinics to reach isolated populations. She is also researching innovative techniques in corneal transplantation to address the growing demand for eye care in South Asia.
Sewa Lamsal
Sewa Lamsal made history as Nepal’s first female Foreign Secretary, a significant achievement in the country’s diplomatic history. Her career includes serving as Nepal’s Ambassador to Pakistan, with concurrent accreditation to several other countries, and as Deputy Permanent Representative at Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the UN. Sewa has been instrumental in shaping Nepal’s foreign policy and advancing its international relations. Recently, she has focused on strengthening Nepal’s regional partnerships, particularly within South Asia, and promoting climate diplomacy at international forums. She has also been a key advocate for women’s leadership in diplomacy and continues to mentor emerging female diplomats across the region.
Sharu Joshi Shrestha
Sharu Joshi Shrestha has been a frontline advocate of gender and development for over 25 years working closely with the Government of Nepal and UN agencies. She has significantly contributed to formulating foreign labor migration policies, emphasising the rights of women migrant workers and their families. As a founding member of the Inter-Generational Feminist Forum and a core group member at Sangat Nepal, she continues to champion women’s empowerment. Recently, Sharu has been leading initiatives to address the impact of climate change on migrant women and advocating for policies to ensure their social and economic rights in both home and host countries. She is also focused on expanding women’s participation in peacebuilding and conflict resolution processes in Nepal.
Dr Shobha Poudel
Dr Shobha Poudel is an agricultural scientist focused on climate change, food security and sustainable farming. She holds the Marie Curie Fellowship from the EU, conducting research on climate-friendly farming techniques in South Asia. She advocates for gender-inclusive agricultural technologies to improve the socio-economic conditions of farmers. Recently, Dr Shobha has been exploring the role of agroecology in enhancing resilience to climate change and improving crop diversity in rural communities. Her work also includes developing policy recommendations for integrating sustainable farming into national agricultural frameworks, with a particular focus on empowering women farmers in climate-vulnerable regions.
Dr Tista Prasai Joshi
Dr Tista Prasai Joshi, Senior Scientific Officer at NAST, has dedicated over two decades to drinking water purification and arsenic contamination solutions. Her achievements include the 2024 TWAS-Samira Omar Innovation Award for Sustainability, the 2019 OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Award in Biological Sciences, and the Nepal Vidya Bhusan “Ka” in 2017, among others. Recently, Dr Tista has been pioneering research on low-cost, sustainable water filtration technologies tailored to rural Nepal, aiming to reduce arsenic exposure. Her work also focuses on the intersection of water quality and public health, exploring community-driven approaches to safe water access and advocating for policy changes to address water contamination in vulnerable areas.

Chandni Joshi
Chandni Joshi is a Gender, Rights and Policy Specialist with over 56 years of experience. Chandni played a significant role in advancing women’s leadership in South Asia as a UNIFEM’s first South Asia Regional Director where she shaped transformative initiatives like Nepal’s Production Credit for Rural Women Programme and promoted gender-responsive budgeting. She is the Senior National Advisor of UN Women Nepal and a leading voice in gender equality, and Enforcer of HomeNet South Asia. She has won numerous national and international accolades. Her name is synonymous with gender, rights and macro policies in Nepal and other South Asian countries.
Asta Laxmi Shakya
Asta Laxmi Shakya is a rebel, politician and former Chief Minister of Bagmati Province. She holds the distinction of being the first woman Chief Minister of the country. She also serves as the Vice President of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist). A feminist leader who strongly believes in advancing equality, reform and honest political practices, she stands at the forefront of the women’s political landscape encouraging women to enter leadership positions.
Haridevi Koirala
Haridevi Koirala’s voice has been a pillar in Nepali folk music for decades. Her debut song, ‘Paina Khabara,’ released in 1985, resonated deeply, capturing the emotional landscape of many. Over her extensive career, she has recorded more than 800 songs across 80 albums, with hits like ‘Aina Herera’ and ‘Phoolko Basana.’ Her contributions have earned her over 250 awards, including the Kshetra Pratap Memorial Literary Award in 2021.
Rita Thapa
Rita Thapa is a feminist activist and the founder of Tewa, a Nepali foundation dedicated to empowering local women through grassroots grantmaking. She has over 30 years of experience in community activism and development, initiating and supporting institutions for women’s empowerment and peace. Rita also founded and led Nagarik Aawaz, an initiative for conflict transformation and peace-building in Nepal. She is an Ashoka Fellow, and is celebrated globally as an inspirational figure, a resource person on feminist leadership, development, and peace and conflict.
Sangeeta Thapa
Sangeeta Rana Thapa is an Art Curator and the Founder of Siddhartha Art Gallery where she has curated over 600 shows of Nepali and international artists. A De Vos Institute Fellow, she established Nepal’s premier Kathmandu International Arts Festival (KIAF) as a tri-annual event. She has guided collectors, initiated community projects, and received multiple awards, including the 2023 Kala Sumbardhak Award. Her work has elevated Nepali art for close to four decades.
Shanti Chadha
Shanti Chadha is a pioneering entrepreneur in Nepal who has been instrumental in empowering and providing economic opportunities for women across the country. She is the founder member of WEAN (Women Entrepreneurs Association of Nepal), the founder President of Federation of Women Entrepreneurs Association of Nepal, founder Vice President of the SAARC Women Entrepreneur Council, and founder Vice President of South Asian Women Development Forum among others. Recipeient of several awards, Shanti is a strong proponent of women’s economic empowerment and has worked relentlessly close to four decades to create an impact on women’s socio economic issues in the country. She has impacted thousands of women and families through skill development and economic empowerment initiatives.
Shyam Badan Shrestha
Shyam Badan Shrestha, founder of Nepal Knotcraft Centre, has been promoting indigenous crafts and empowering women in Nepal since 1984. Her enterprise specialises in unique macramé crafts and natural fiber products, reflecting Nepal’s rich cultural heritage. Through her efforts, she has trained hundreds of women across nine districts, providing them with sustainable livelihood opportunities. She won the World Craft Council Award of Excellence for Handicraft in 2018 for producing handicraft materials made from fibrous plants. In the same year, she also won first prize in the SAARC Women Entrepreneurship Competition. She is a strong proponent of women’s economic empowerment.
Sushila Karki
Sushila Karki is the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal and the only woman to have held the post. Her tenure was marked by landmark decisions and a steadfast commitment to justice. Her notable work decisions in Nepal’s legal field include Sudan Peacekeeping Mission Corruption. Beyond the bench, Sushila has contributed to literature, authoring her autobiography “Nyaya” in 2018 and the novel “Kara” in 2019, reflecting her experiences and insights into Nepali society.
