100 Women of Impact: A Testament to Strength, Resilience, and Change

What is the 100 Women of Impact list? Why was it important to create one? Did we leave out commendable names? Have we been diverse enough? These are questions that stood out loud for me personally because I do know that while all the names on this list deserve to be on it, we would have also missed out on some key names that should have been on this list.

Why do we need to make this list? For us, it is an important documentation of women achievement in various spheres of life. It is our opportunity to acknowledge the spirit that drives women to walk that extra mile, that makes them follow their dreams and find their purpose, it is a recognition of their tears, fears and sacrifice, it is about dignity and respect, and it is about understanding the power of choice and the commitment to building a world that is truly more inclusive.

In the world’s news media, women were found to make up just 24% of news subjects and sources reported. According to this report, this number has not changed since 2010. Women-centred headlines use words that are explicitly gendered. Women are sought for their opinions on fashion and beauty but not so much for their thoughts on policy, politics, business, science or innovation. This makes the work we do even more meaningful for us at WOW.

Patriarchy has long stood as a force against women expressing their leadership and owning their space in positions of power and authority even when they are more qualified than their counterparts. Today, women see reservation as a need to make and own that space knowing well enough that they can compete should equality and fair play truly exist. This list is not just about acknowledging champions of change and women breaking barriers; it’s also about advocating for a future where every being has equal opportunities and rights. We are also looking to a future that works on merit and where women leaders do not feel that they are being measured on patriarchal standards. And while change begins with each one of us, may our choices always reflect integrity and compassion irrespective of gender, caste and status. More power to this list of hundred as they continue to champion change and set new benchmarks of achievement and impact.
