For over three decades, 1974 AD has been at the heart of Nepal’s vibrant music scene. From their roots in classic rock with Nepali folk influences to the fusion of blues, jazz, funk and contemporary styles that they embrace today, the band’s sound has undergone a remarkable transformation. However, through all the shifts in genre and style, one thing has remained constant: their deep connection to Nepal’s cultural, social and political landscape.
The journey of 1974 AD began in 1998 with the release of ‘Samjhi Baschu’, a fusion of rock and Nepali folk that marked the start of their musical evolution. By 2001, they achieved mainstream success with ‘Satabdi’, bringing their unique blend of sounds to a wider audience. The following years saw even deeper folk-rock explorations in albums like ‘Jungi Nishan’ (2002) and ‘Pinjada Ko Suga’ (2004), while their more recent work – On Air, ‘Aath Athara’, ‘Hajar Sapana’, and ‘Nirantarta’ – has been characterised by modern production experiments. This continual evolution, along with collaborations during international tours, has kept their music dynamic and fresh.
As 1974 AD’s sound has transformed, so too has the band’s approach to their music. The balance between individual artistic expression and maintaining the band’s signature style is at the core of their identity. Every member brings their unique influences but together they create a sound that’s distinctly 1974 AD. The band’s journey reflects personal growth and a collective commitment to pushing musical boundaries, while remaining deeply rooted in their essence.
“We have always respected the band’s identity, while also being open to each of our personal artistic journeys,” says one member. “It’s about balancing change and experimentation with staying true to what makes us who we are.”
1974 AD’s music is not just about rhythm and melody; it has always mirrored the socio-political landscape of Nepal. From songs that reflect national pride to those addressing social issues, the band’s lyrics are a direct response to the times. The People’s Movement, political instability, and natural disasters have all found their way into their music, creating a soundtrack to the struggles and triumphs of the Nepali people.
“We have always tried to give a positive message through our music,” shares the band. “Being the voice of the people, especially in difficult times, has always been an integral part of what we do.”
One of the key elements behind 1974 AD’s enduring success is their chemistry, built on shared passion, mutual respect and adaptability. Despite lineup changes over the years, the band’s commitment to creativity and collaboration has kept them united.
“We love and respect each other, and I have always seen the band as my second family,” says a member, reflecting on the tight-knit nature of the group. “That bond has been the secret to our success.”
The music industry has changed dramatically over the years, particularly with the rise of streaming and social media. While the days of physical albums are now behind them, 1974AD has embraced the digital age, using these new platforms to reach a broader audience. The band remains committed to evolving their sound, blending traditional Nepali folk with modern genres like rock, jazz, and blues.
“We don’t follow trends, we set them,” says a band member, acknowledging the importance of staying ahead in an ever-changing musical landscape. “The key is authenticity; do what works best for you, and the rest will follow.”
There have been several defining moments throughout 1974 AD’s career, but two performances stand out. The 2002 ‘Rock Yatra’ concert at Dasharath Stadium was a pivotal event drawing thousands of passionate fans. More recently, their performance at ICC in Sydney in 2024 took their music to a global stage, reinforcing their impact and the strength of their connection with fans both at home and abroad.
“Rock Yatra in 2002 was definitely a standout moment for us,” says the band. “It was a celebration of everything we had worked for, and to see so many fans come together like that was unforgettable.”
As 1974 AD prepares to mark their 30th anniversary with ‘Rock Yatra-II’ at the Hyatt grounds on April 5, fans can expect a show that brings back the energy of the 2002 concert. The event promises a dynamic set list featuring classic anthems alongside fresh sounds, enhanced stage production, and a celebration of their musical evolution.
“It will be a nostalgic yet evolved experience,” says the band. “We are excited to show how far we’ve come while staying true to our roots.”
In the world of Nepali music, 1974 AD has carved out a legacy that is both timeless and forward-thinking. Their ability to evolve, while staying deeply connected to their cultural and musical identity, ensures their place as one of Nepal’s most influential and beloved bands.
