Gen Z is at the heart of the creator economy, social commerce and AI and while it’s an exciting world of possibilities, I don’t know if I could fully thrive living in a world from a lens. The buzz words of this economy are influencers, authenticity, AI tools, content strategy, engagement, followers and likes, and social commerce is only poised to grow in the coming days. While most people use social media to connect with family and friends, for Gen Z it is a preferred career choice with 28% of them identifying themselves as content creators.
Born between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s, Gen Z did not just witness the rise of the internet, they shaped it. As digital natives, technology is ingrained in their lives. Traditional careers have lost its appeal to most of this generation who finds flexibility, purpose and creative expression important to their work and time. While they are more open, dynamic, inclusive and possibly the best educated generation yet, they can also be self-absorbed, screen obsessed and lazy.
What I find fascinating is that while the Gen Z is rejecting traditional working norms, they are transforming work attitudes to be happier and healthier. They prioritise mental wellbeing, time off and work life balance. At work, they expect clear boundaries, good working conditions and satisfactory pay… all of which to me is very reasonable. The only point while working with this fabulous generation is the occasional lapse of genuine ownership of their work within the team dynamics and ability to be tough and meet hard deadlines. I love that they are fun, intelligent and casual but I think they would do well if they chose to walk the extra mile that helps shape you into a stronger person.
In this edition of WOW, we meet some of our Gen Zs to understand their world view, what is important to them and how are they navigating their life and career.
While we balance the real and the virtual world, intrinsic to all generations I find the need for purpose, love, connection, freedom, empathy and happiness. It’s an easy choice; we can be generations apart or generations together.
