When dating apps first emerged, they were often met with skepticism and a degree of social stigma. Many people viewed them as a last resort for those who struggled to meet potential partners in more traditional settings. The perception was such that using a dating app implied desperation, and it was associated with superficiality, as people were judged largely by appearance. Moreover, there were concerns about safety and authenticity. Tbhe idea of meeting a complete stranger from the internet was also viewed as unsettling. In those early years, dating apps were often seen as a domain for casual hookups rather than serious relationships.
Fast forward to today, and dating apps have shattered all the early stereotypes becoming a mainstream method for people to meet romantic partners. In fact, they have become the norm for people of all ages and backgrounds, transforming the way relationships are formed.
International apps like Tinder, Bumble and Hinge have expanded the scope of dating, fostering meaningful connections and even marriages. The rise of specialised apps catering to niche interests and demographics has further broken-down barriers, showing that dating apps aren’t just for casual encounters but are a legitimate platform for building lasting relationships. Safety features and more transparent matching algorithms have also evolved, giving users more control and trust in the process.
To find out what our home-grown dating apps are offering, WOW talks to Milyo and BiheNepal.
Milyo
In a world where swiping right has become second nature, the landscape of dating has transformed dramatically. Yet, for many in the Nepali community, the challenge of finding meaningful connections often feels daunting. Cultural stigma and traditional expectations create barriers that make it difficult to navigate the realm of modern romance. Enter Milyo, a matchmaking app designed specifically for Nepalis, aiming to bridge the gap between heritage and contemporary dating.
Founded on the belief that the unique nuances of Nepali culture deserve dedicated attention, Milyo offers a tailored experience that international dating platforms overlook. With over 17,000 matches made globally, the app seeks to provide a safe space for individuals to explore relationships grounded in shared identity and values. Milyo not only embraces the rich tapestry of Nepali ethnicities but also champions inclusivity, offering features that support the LGBTQ+ community and prioritise user privacy.
“The stigma around dating in Nepali society can be intimidating,” explains Pukar Bhattarai, Co- Founder, Milyo. “We recognised that many traditional matchmaking methods, like arranged marriages, don’t align with the desires of Millennials and Gen Zs today. Our goal is to create a modern, respectful approach to dating while honouring cultural specificity,” Pukar adds.
One of the standout features of Milyo is its commitment to privacy. Recognising the hesitance among young women to engage with dating apps, Milyo has implemented functionality that allows users to keep their profiles discreet, revealing photos only to matched partners. This innovation has notably increased user adoption among those concerned about familial scrutiny.
The C0vid 19 pandemic has undeniably accelerated the shift toward online dating. Lockdowns forced many to seek connection digitally, making platforms like Milyo not just a convenience but a necessity. Yet, for those who still crave in-person interaction, Milyo is also fostering a community through pop-up networking events and speed dating, blending the best of both worlds.
But Milyo is more than just matching singles; it embodies a mission to make a positive societal impact. A portion of every subscription is donated to an independent orphanage in Kathmandu, ensuring that children have access to education. “We’re not just focused on competition; our priority is the people we serve,” Pukar emphasises.
As the Nepali diaspora grows with many seeking opportunities abroad, Milyo aims to preserve cultural heritage while fostering connections. The app serves as a lifeline, uniting individuals in a fast-paced world and allowing them to maintain ties to their roots. In an era marked by technological advancement and changing social norms, Milyo is redefining the matchmaking narrative for the Nepali community. It stands as a testament to how love can flourish even amidst the complexities of modern life—proving that, while the methods may evolve, the desire for connection remains timeless.
BiheNepal
In an age where smartphones and the internet dominate our daily lives, it’s no surprise that dating has also migrated online. With a simple click, individuals can connect with potential partners from all corners of the globe. For many in Nepal, this shift is both exciting and challenging, as societal attitudes toward online dating gradually evolve. Online dating offers a vast and diverse pool of singles, breaking free from the confines of traditional matchmaking, where options were typically limited to friends, family, and workplace circles.
As one user of Bihenepal, puts it, “With just a few clicks, someone from Kathmandu can connect with someone in the Netherlands. The possibilities are endless.” Despite the convenience and reach that dating apps provide, many in Nepal are still warming up to the concept. While platforms like TikTok have normalised content sharing and fostered greater openness, online dating remains a topic of cautious exploration. Younger generations, particularly Gen Z, are more inclined to embrace the idea of creating dating profiles without hesitation, contrasting with millennials who may still grapple with the associated stigma.
Bihenepal has seen numerous success stories since its inception, with users frequently reporting immediate connection during initial conversations that lead to in-person meetings. “Even those who haven’t yet found a long-term partner appreciate the chance to meet new people and form friendships,” shares Shreya Katuwal, Co-Founder, BiheNepal.
The platform is eager to spotlight these success stories, but they face the challenge of convincing couples to publicly share their journeys. As the competition in the online dating sphere intensifies, Bihenepal is committed to enhancing user experience.
Currently, the app is undergoing a significant upgrade aimed at introducing new features, improving security, and incorporating AI-driven algorithms to better match users. The first version of this upgrade is set to launch by November, promising a more engaging and secure environment for singles. However, the landscape is not without its complexities. While online dating provides unparalleled ease of access, it may also lead to a culture of indecision, where users feel overwhelmed by endless options. “We want to emphasise commitment-based dating, which resonates more with our cultural values,” Shreya highlights.
Safety is another paramount concern. Users are encouraged to engage in thorough background checks and utilise social media to vet potential matches. Bihenepal is responding to these needs by updating user requirements in the upcoming upgrade, aiming to enhance security and comfort for its community.
The benefits of dating apps are clear: a broader selection of partners, improved compatibility through algorithms, and the ability to interact with others across geographic boundaries. Yet, as Bihenepal and other platforms navigate this digital landscape, they remain focused on cultivating genuine connections rooted in commitment – a reflection of the evolving yet deeply ingrained cultural values of Nepal.
As the world continues to change, so does the way we approach love and relationships. For the people of Nepal, online dating may just be the key to unlocking new possibilities in romance, blending tradition with modernity in the quest for meaningful
connections.
