Away from the pageant spotlight, Urusha Bhandari speaks about fashion as cultural storytelling, the value of local craftsmanship and why authenticity never goes out of style.

Fashion has always been about more than what meets the eye. Behind every silhouette is a story, behind every textile is a tradition, and behind every runway moment is a culture waiting to be understood. As Nepali fashion gradually finds a larger audience beyond its borders, conversations are shifting from trends to identity. The focus is no longer just on what is being worn but on where it comes from and the people who bring it to life.
For Urusha Bhandari, that distinction matters. Known for her work in modelling and currently representing the country as Miss Nepal International 2025, she sees fashion as a bridge between cultures rather than a showcase of personal style. During this conversation with WOW, she reflects on pageantry, balancing multiple careers and why the future of Nepali fashion depends on telling our own stories with confidence.
You have long belonged to the world of fashion and modelling but how did stepping into Miss Nepal shift the way you see beauty, ambition and your own voice?
Stepping into Miss Nepal marked a natural yet profound evolution in my journey. After six years in fashion and modelling, I found inspiration in self-taught Nepali trailblazers like Prabal Gurung, Sanyukta Shrestha, Anjali Lama, Lain Singh Bangdel, Lemi Tamang and Gautam Dhimal along with my own journey which elevated our culture globally and taught me to perceive beauty in uniqueness, ambition in unwavering commitment and voice in the authentic stories of their art.
Miss Nepal didn’t create a dramatic shift in my perception but deepened this perspective, transforming beauty beyond aesthetics into a holistic essence rooted in resilience, cultural identity and inner strength. Standing on stage I realised no crown, gown, or photograph could speak for me if I could not speak for myself prompting the deeper question: Who am I when the lights dim and cameras stop?

Ultimately, Miss Nepal revealed that a woman’s most powerful feature is not just her face but her perspective. I am honoured to carry this legacy forward, using the platform to showcase Nepal’s rich heritage, diverse tribes and unique narratives so our Nepal and Nepali artists gain the international recognition they deserve.
What has been the most transformative part of this journey?
The most transformative part of my journey has been realising that growth begins the moment we step beyond our comfort zone and that discipline is what sustains it. Whether it’s representing Nepal internationally, attending public events, pursuing my career in medical field or taking on new creative fashion projects, every experience has challenged me to grow while staying grounded. Every challenge taught me to stay calm under pressure without compromising my mental or physical well-being.

More importantly, I have realised that every opportunity comes with a responsibility to use my platform creatively, inspire meaningful conversations and create awareness that can positively impact others. To me, that is what true transformation looks like: growing not only for yourself but also for the people you hope to serve.
What does it mean to represent Nepal through fashion on a global stage?
To represent Nepal on the global stage through fashion is to reveal the heart of our identity. Fashion in Nepal reflects the vivid expression of our culture, heritage, landscapes and the unheard stories.
During my international pageant journey, I proudly wore a majestic Limbu-inspired national costume and creations by gifted Nepali designers. Each ensemble showcased the mastery of our artisans and the innovation of our fashion industry. The admiration I received from all the outfits I wore internationally reaffirmed that Nepali fashion can command the world’s attention, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary elegance.

Fashion remains, for me, a powerful bridge of cultural diplomacy, preserving our legacy while empowering our artisans and introducing Nepal’s rich identity to the world. I am committed to elevating our fashion on the international stage.
What is fashion beyond clothing and beauty?
Fashion is a powerful medium for narrating the unheard stories embedded in the art, crafts and creativity of artisans, designers, hidden streets and living cultures. It is an act of honour that preserves Nepal’s rich heritage, resources, struggles, talents and traditions as exemplified by Sanyukta Shrestha who fuses traditional Nepali handicrafts and Newar artistry with sustainable luxury on London Fashion Week runways thereby extending our cultural reach globally. Fashion serves as a silent bridge to the international community through our unique artistic expressions while promoting Nepali resources and tourism for meaningful economic impact.
Anjali Lama, Nepal’s trailblazing transgender model, further amplify this presence from Lakmé to New York Fashion Week, championing resilience and inclusivity.

In the global fashion arena, I aspire to be known as the voice and persona that carries Nepali talent, heritage and soul wherever I go.
How can Nepali fashion gain greater international recognition?
Nepali fashion can rise to global prominence the moment we own our narrative with pride and courage. Start from our own soil, creativity and platforms. When designers and artisans create boldly from the heart drawing from our heritage, sustainable resources, and unique stories and share that authenticity consistently on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, the world responds. Social media has no borders.

From Kriti Mainali reaching New York and Paris Fashion Weeks to Sanyukta Shrestha earning worldwide acclaim through her sustainable designs, the proof is clear. Every post and reel you share, plants a seed for Nepal’s global legacy. Value your voice, master digital platforms and celebrate our identity unapologetically.
The future is not about waiting to be discovered, it’s about shining so brightly from our own space that the world comes knocking. Nepal’s moment is now.
What challenges have shaped your confidence and resilience?
The biggest challenge I faced was the constant pressure from family and relatives to choose one conventional career path medicine, while questioning my desire to pursue multiple passions. But I always believed humans are capable of far more than a single label. From a young age, I fought through the outside noise and refused to live a limited life. That struggle to discover my true potential across different fields shaped my confidence and resilience.
Today, as a dentist, model, entrepreneur, fitness enthusiast and music lover, I continue to evolve without limits proving that real growth comes from courage, not conformity.
