WHAT IS AN ISSUE YOU FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT AND WHAT IS THE IMPACT YOU WANT TO CREATE

by wowmagazine

What is an issue you feel strongly about and why?

Tenzin: Being a designer for over a decade, what I really feel strong about is the exploitation of designers in the field of glamour be it pageantry, films or TV shows. I have received ample of messages where they have explained how they got scammed and misused by the people. I myself have faced it sometimes. We really need to stop this. If not, there will be very less people in the field of designing. We all need to flourish together.

Priya: Understanding the value of economic empowerment, I soon realised that a contributing factor in repairing the prevailing gender inequality is economic empowerment. Be it academic, cultural, economic, social or in the political sector, Nepali women have been restrained in almost every field. More often than not, we are denied access to important decisions, deprived from educational opportunities, denied a platform headed for economic enablement and economic equality.

Saswat: We have been observing and witnessing several issues in communities. As a youth, I believe one of the issues would be ‘getting disconnected’. Appropriate use of technology is absolutely necessary for personal, professional and economic growth however people these days are losing face-to-face or in person contact which something I suppose technology can’t bestow. Loneliness is inclining and has negatively led to stress, apprehension, fear and rise to mental health issues. It’s very essential that you have at least one person in your life that you trust to share all your feelings with, someone who understands and does not judge.

Pradeepta: The issue that is really close to my heart right now is the deteriorating health services in our country. The rural areas of our country are not given sufficient amount of health care facilities, it was starkly evident especially during the pandemic.

Neelam: One issue that I strongly feel about is women empowerment because especially in Nepali society we still lack in a lot of aspects about empowering women. For me to empower women is to let them make their own choices irrespective of the matter. It shouldn’t be limited to career and clothes, but in all the aspects of life and for that everything must start from home.

What is the impact you want to create by raising this issue?

“Be it academic, cultural, economic, social or in the political sector, Nepali women have been restrained in almost every field. More often than not, we are denied access to important decisions, deprived from educational opportunities, denied a platform headed for economic enablement and economic equality.”
Priya Sigdel,
President, HattiHatti

Tenzin: The impact is for the people to think and understand we can do so much in the field of designing if given proper credentials and financial support to designers. Unpaid labour leads towards less creativity and lesser people in the field of fashion. I wanted to raise a voice for upcoming new designers who are the future in the field of designing.

Priya: Being the president of an organisation that works for and with women from marginalised communities, I realise that I am on my path to bring and harvest change. However I not only strive to make an impact by only spreading awareness about economic independence but also train them and teach them about sustainable livelihoods.

Saswat: As an HR and people’s person, I believe in ‘in person’ socialisation.  I have been engaged in different learning and development activities and have been facilitating different leadership and communication sessions while also mentoring youths individually and in team wise. While I teach, I also look forward to learning myself as I organise different workshops and skill development sessions that not only enhance skills but foster creativity, build confidence, help people gain opinions and grow as a person. Additionally, I am focusing on finding individual purpose and contributing to societal change.

Pradeepta: I think awareness on the importance of health not just for oneself but for the country is the most essential factor. The country can move forward only if it is healthy. After the pandemic, our economic and tourism sector is stagnant. We have all realised that health is the most important infrastructure for any country in terms of building a nation and I feel this awareness should be at the core of the government’s agenda.

Neelam: If we allow the girls in our family to make their own choices and decisions and support them, not only the life of that individual will flourish but together with that the family and the society as a whole will have a much better scenario than now.

What are some of the choices and changes that you have made towards this?

“It’s very essential that you have at least one person in your life that you trust to share all your feelings with, someone who understands and does not judge.”
Saswat Karki
Banker, Laxmi Bank & Recipient of Asian Youth Inspiration Award

Tenzin: I have decided not to do any unpaid design for international pageants this year. It is a stand from my side so that in future new designers get an opportunity to showcase their creativity with proper financial support.

Priya: I believe my choice to speak up and stand for rights make me who I am today. What is change? How do you define big or small changes? I don’t have an answer to that but I am in the process of learning and growing. I try to discover and encounter women entrepreneurs and who work unceasingly towards financial independence of other women and we work together. I intend to draw attention to the problems that limit women in their pursuit of liberation through HattiHatti Nepal which believes in sustainable changes and that’s how I have been trying to bring change. Long way to go.

Saswat: As a 21st century youth, I believe in going beyond work cubicles and encourage the same for today’s lively young minds or individuals to become limitless. To share what I know is my contribution. I have been associated with different voluntary clubs such as Rotaract Club and have been guiding individuals especially in terms of their career paths. Also, I got the opportunity to work for visually impaired people and used my voice for their education rights.

As a choice, I have purposefully decided to work for the department of human resources and am focused on helping young individuals discover opportunities and develop skills that is key in today’s competitive market place to survive and grow.

Pradeepta: I think the choices that I have made over the years are definitely to understand how the health care system works and to disintegrate the policies and how the system works in our country. I have been able to arrange health camps, helping thousands of people and I feel knowing these things will help me in future to make a change in the health care system of our country.

Neelam: Out of many big choices that I have made in my life, I would like to mention one that is the decision to pursue a career in media. Among the small changes which create a big difference is to listen to myself and care less about others opinions.

What are some of the simple things each one of us can do to help in the impact that you want to create?

“We have all realised that health is the most important infrastructure for any country in terms of building a nation and I feel this awareness should be at the core of the government’s agenda.”
Pradeepta Adhikari,
Miss Universe Nepal 2019

Tenzin: I request every individual or organisation to help each other to create a safe place to work together and give proper credentials, financial or non financial. When backed by corporate sponsors make sure you give a part to the designing/clothing department too. And be sure to raise your voice if you see a negative impact and support each other.

Priya: Be mindful with your actions and understand your privilege; use your privilege as responsibility. It’s not always about impacting hundreds of lives but as Heather Wolf has well quoted,” Just one act of kindness can change someone’s world”.

Saswat: I believe that, it’s very much needed to be authentic and be real inside out. Being kind, appreciative, compassionate, without expectations, helpful, sharing will definitely help bringing about collective change.

Pradeepta: We youths should really have a greater political participation because at the end of the day policies and law are what really rule us and we need to understand the government is for the people, of the people, and by the people. We are the future of the country.

Neelam: As it’s said small things matters, few small efforts that we all can make will have great results like being conscious about keeping the environment clean, being kind and compassionate, and respecting all jobs. Let’s just eradicate the mentality of big jobs – small jobs. And I am sure if we focus on these three things we will definitely have a good society to live in.

Where do you derive your inner strength from?

“If we allow the girls in our family to make their own choices and decisions and support them, not only the life of that individual will flourish but together with that the family and the society as a whole will have a much better scenario than now.”
Neelam Chand,
Media personality

Tenzin: I have worked enough in this industry to know how exactly things work and the people who agree with the things I say. The support that people show me to raise voice is how I get my strength. So, please show your support when you think the voice that someone is raising is correct. That only motivates people to say things which most people are scared to even come up with.

Priya: Self-Awareness and not seeking approval gives me inner strength to perform and get results; this is a very important lesson I got from my mother.

Saswat: Every day, I get my inner strength from my experiences. My biggest inspiration is my need to do more, and every day I make sure to enhance my learning and capacity for giving back. As I wake up each day, I look forward to accepting whatever challenges life has to offer.

Pradeepta: I get my inner strength from the love that I have for my country, the people of my country, and humanity. I want to inspire and be inspired till my last breath.

Neelam: To build up the courage to do anything in life, I always challenge my potential. My family gives me immense strength.
