Leaving your dog home alone while you are at work doesn’t have to be a guilt-ridden experience. Incorporating a mix of mental and physical stimulation, establish routines, and leverage modern technology to keep your pet happy and content until you return.
Tire them out
Dogs thrive on routine. It provides them with a sense of security. Try to maintain a consistent feeding time, playtime, and bathroom breaks. Before leaving for work, engage in a brief play session or a short walk to tire them out a bit, making it easier for them to settle down during your absence.
Stimulate them mentally
In your absence, use methods to engage your dogs such as toys that dispense treats or require your dog to solve a task to access their food. Modern technology offers innovative solutions for pet owners. Interactive cameras and treat dispensers allow you to monitor your dog’s activities remotely and even interact with them. You can dispense treats, talk to your dog, and offer reassurance, helping to bridge the gap between you and your furry friend during your work hours.
Hire a dog walker
If possible, hire a dog walker or get a relative or friend to help for the time you are not available. Social interactions and outdoor adventures can provide much-needed mental and physical stimulation.
Leave the TV turned on
Leaving a radio or TV on at a low volume provides auditory stimulation. This will mimic the sounds of a more populated household.
Variation in toys
Introducing a variety of toys can prevent your dog from getting bored. Plush toys, chewy toys, and squeaky toys all offer different joys. Leave them around their feeding bowls so that they don’t have to stress themselves out in finding them. You can even hide small treats amongst a cluster of your dog’s favorite toys.
