EARTH RHYTHM’S CARE FOR LONG TRESSES

We’ve been making all kinds of bathroom swaps in the name of plastic-free beauty, from switching to reusable cotton pads to using mouthwash in a metal bottle, but one of the easiest of all is switching from bottled shampoo to shampoo bars. Compact and convenient, this fast-growing beauty category is one to watch with environmental concerns increasingly playing on our minds.

Earth Rhythm’s Hemp & Charcoal shampoo bar is a must try. Not only for plastic packaging-free, but also for other common qualities which include a more natural focus when it comes to their ingredient lists and greater longevity when compared to liquid counter parts. These mighty bars are concentrated pucks of shampoo that can outlast two to three bottles of the liquid stuff: one bar will last up to 80 washes. Furthermore, because of their smaller size, more can fit into the lorries that transport them to reduce your carbon footprint even further.

Now how do you use a shampoo bar? The change in application takes a little getting used to. Either you may rub the bar between your hands first or apply it directly to the scalp instead. The bar lathers surprisingly well but requires thorough washing through to keep residue to a minimum.

The ingredient used in the bar like natural bamboo charcoal is known to strengthen hair follicles while removing build up, oil, and pollutants and to bring back lost luster and shine to every strand. You may not feel much difference in the first wash but gradually you will fall in love with the texture of your hair.

One thing which will disappoint you is the smell. The bar doesn’t have a pleasing smell like the bottled shampoos. We are all so used to personal care products that smell amazing and feel a certain way. Fragrances used in most of these products are chemicals with complex structures that cannot break down naturally in our waste water systems. Furthermore, chemicals used as anti-bacterial agents and preservatives (like paraben and triclosan) are now showing up in aquatic animals’ tissues, where it shouldn’t be.

Instead of conditioner, I blended it with Earth Rhythm’s Hibiscus, Shikkakai and Arnica hair butter. It has a buttery consistency which melts immediately when rubbed between the palms. Apply pea size on the damp hair and you are ready to go. The best thing about this hair butter is that you can use it as a leave-in-conditioner as well. For those worrying it to have a greasy effect, well, if you use two-three scoops of hair butter it will definitely result greasy otherwise it leaves the hair less frizzy and shiner, acting like a moisturiser for your hair.

Earth Rhythm is an Indian brand founded by dad-daughter duo, Siva & Harini in 2018. The brand is certified organic, non-toxic and sustainable products devoid of any adulterated elements. The shampoo bar and hair butter is priced at Rs 950 and Rs 1400 respectively.
